did you know this could happen?

Okay, I'm going to be vague here...

I was having lunch with a teen-writer friend the other day. His new book was recently released to great reviews. (It's a fantastic book; I wish I could reveal his name so I can adequately promote it here!) Also, his first book was published last year and is still selling very well.

Anyway, this writer was a little "down in the dumps" because a certain large bookstore chain has REFUSED TO SELL HIS BOOK.

Why?

Too much violence? Too much gratuitous sexual content? Too many four-letter words?

Nah.

So why won't this unnamed bookseller stock this title in any of their NUMEROUS stores?

Simple. They don't like the book cover, that's why!

Again, I wish I could show you the book because you would see how appealing the cover is, how inviting, especially to the teen audience it was designed for. But some sales representatives somewhere decided the cover is not "enticing" enough and, therefore, not worth stocking on the shelves. Of course, the book can be "special ordered," but doesn't that remove a large chunk of sales that would have been otherwise generated by the "browsing public?"

I know. The argument could be made that a bookstore has the right to sell whatever book it chooses. True enough. But did you all know that a few people can make this kind of decision, one that can severely affect the life and success of a book? Shouldn't a book be given the right to sink or swim on its own merit? And, more importantly, should a book cover be the determining factor for refusing to carry a book nationwide? (Why not order a few books per store and see how they sell before taking such a drastic action?)

It just seems like such a shame that this book is not being given a fair chance.

Am I the only one who never knew this could happen?

I knew it COULD happen, but it surprises me that it would happen to an author who is getting good reviews and whose first book sells well. It makes no sense to me.

Oh dear, Coe. Do you really want to start talking about "fair" in this industry? And any industry for that matter. Life.

Yup. I knew. And I know a lot of other things in this business that aren't fair either.

It bites, doesn't it?

Please review the book at some other time so that I can learn of it and go out and order it from a bookstore that doesn't carry it. You know, a grass roots effort of sorts. Let's make them change their minds!

Do I sound like a spunky dreamer? Oh yeah, that's right: I am!

Coe, that is an awful story. I like your idea Anonymous- I want to go out and special order it too.

I'm not surprised. From what I hear, the buyers at a certain large chain all have backgrounds in MATH and STATISTICS. Therefore, of course they will make a purchasing decision based on the cover -- they never even read the books they select for their stores!
They simply run the numbers.

i worked for b&n many years back and learned much about the dark side of book retail so, yes, i knew this could happen.

her name is sessalee hensley and she's the primary fiction buyer for b&n. it is no secret in the industry that if she objects to a cover when she sees a galley a publisher will change it completely in order to assure b&n carries it.

equally sad is that b&n can often justify not carrying a specific title based on things like "availability" (meaning if it cannot be carried in quantity in a majority of stores then it isn't carried in any) while in actuallity they may be withholding it for content, a de facto censorship that they cannot be called on. incresing sales will not change their minds unless they become unavoidably large (like bestseller large).

i'm not saying b&n is the guilty party here, but this sort of thing doesn't surprise me.

Does anyone know what percentage of an author's book sales normally come from big chains? Is it as high as libraries?

I think I heard it was something like 20%, but I could be completely wrong about that.

yikes. frightening. i agree with you, coe, that a book should stand on it's own merit...but if that bookseller happens to be a major house, wouldn't you change the cover? i think i would...but i wouldn't like it.

Actually, it's even worse than that. A chain like B&N and Borders can actually get publishers to change perfectly good covers of books if they don't think they'll sell. The fact that Borders does this just kills me too. I mean, have you ever seen their pitiful children's sections? Laughable, to say the least. And they get sway? I want sway to cancel out THEIR sway.

So very depressing, and happens regularly. Much to my glee the large chain that I coicidentally work for in addition to the publisher I work for has just decided to start stocking some of our books. It is a miracle. It will affect sales. It was based on the covers.

And of course, the depressing thing is that the cover could be kid appealing, but not appeal to the buyer or vice versa. I mean, what buyers thought the original Lightning Thief cover was appealing? Riordian supposedly got the kids to write the publisher to complain about the cover. (I have no idea if it's true, but it makes a good story.) Yet, when it came out you could find it in the stores. (Although someone must have complained since the series got a redesign.)
