what'd'ya think?
From today's Publishers Marketplace:
Children's:
Young Adult
Candace Bushnell's THE CARRIE DIARIES, about Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw's high-school years, to Alessandra Balzer at Balzer & Bray, in a two-book deal, for publication in fall 2010, by Heather Schroder at ICM (world).
Could this be any good? Or will it be just a watered-down version of SEX AND THE CITY? I'm kind of torn on this one. I think it has possibility. If it's handled well, the characters could explore their own sexuality in an honest, realistic way. And that would be refreshing since there aren't all that many books out there about female sexuality (from a girl's point of view.) And it would be interesting seeing how Carrie navigates high school and tries to figure out what she'll do with her life.
But if the publishers are just trying to capture some of the remaining buzz of SEX AND THE CITY and write fluffy books that are all about brand names and not real characters, then I'm not interested.
But I am curious to see which way Candace Bushnell will go.

Since it's the real author of Sex and the City, it's possible that it could be good. Or it might be just more Gossip Girl. I know I'll check it out though!
Aren't all new Candace Bushnell novels just watered down versions of S&TC? ;-)
The Observer has quite a funny post about this:

Does anyone else think it could be weird reading about a YA character we already know for sure never gets her head more straightened out than Carrie does after umpteen seasons of the show?
I hope it doesn't lead too many younger YA readers (middle schoolers) to watch the show before they're ready to put its themes into healthy perspective.
Is it the Carrie of SATC, the book? or SATC, the TV show? I always felt that the two were quite different.
i think it will be great, because alessandra balzer is one of the most talented editors, ever. for reals.
Jill & Liz -I've never read any of Candace's books. Are they any good? I only know Carrie from the TV show and the movie. But I suppose she'll base the YA character on her books, not the TV show.
Jeanie -- I know what you're saying. The TV show does get into some "adult" stuff. But I'm one of those people who believes kids aren't harmed by watching that kind of thing (or reading those kinds of books!) Of course, ideally I'd like them to wait awhile, too. Also, they have SATC on regular TV now and it's already watered down. So it's not too bad if they decide to watch it.
Coe, its been a while, but the book is much more breezy and in some ways distanced from the characters.
And I have this image of CB writing about Carrie's high school boyfriends and the TV fandom being upset that characters introduced in the TV show aren't in the book. Ditto for anything else in the TV show, not the book.
It should be interesting to see how the books relate to the show because on the one hand, it would make sense for the books only to be 100% faithful to the universe of the original book. On the other hand, the demand for these books exists thanks to the shows, so it would also make sense to respect that...
